Police were dispatched around 10:10 a.m. to Lynn Classical High School on O'Callaghan Way where they found a 16-year-old suffering from a stab wound to the back, according to the Lynn Police Department.
The victim received medical assistance on scene and was then transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
A 17-year-old student was taken into custody and initially charged with assault to murder and carrying a dangerous weapon on school grounds.
The school was entered a lockdown to ensure safety of everyone in the building, according to Mayor Jared Nicholson.
"We share our sympathies for the victim and his family and hope for a speedy recovery," Nicholson said. "Our students’ safety is our top priority and violence on any level in our schools is unacceptable. We will work together to find out more about how this happened and prevent future occurrences.
Police believe the stabbing to be an isolated incident and say there is no information to suggest that other students are at risk.
